The aim of this paper is to relate the coherence models used in normative theories with empirical reality. Classic behaviour models have been considered and k-acyclic and k-transitive preference relations have been introduced. In order to approximate theoretical structures to real behaviour, we have characterised the properties of the models used by means of algebraic conditions. We have then established a computer programme which determines the coherence levels reached by an individual in his preferences. Finally, we report the statistical results obtained from surveys involving 500 students, and we analyse the influence of certain variables on the coherence levels.
